What is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of exercise developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. Formerly known as "Contrology", it encourages the use of breathing techniques and mental awareness to gain (or regain) complete control of the body resulting in core strength, flexibility and stability.
Joseph Pilates stated: "Contrology is complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit. Through Contrology you first purposefully acquire complete control of your own body and then through proper repetition of its exercises you gradually and progressively acquire that natural rhythm and coordination associated with all your subconscious activities. Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit."
Who can benefit from Pilates?
Pilates is one of the most versatile disciplines as the program can be tailored to: children, elite athletes, those recovering from injury as well as those who suffer chronic pain, new and expecting moms, as well as seniors looking to stay strong and mobile in their golden years. In short, Pilates has something to offer everyone: from the 8-year old to the 80-year old!
What should I look for in a Pilates instructor?
Pilates instructors should be fully certified from an accredited Pilates school. A good Pilates instructor has logged hundreds (if not thousands) of hours of study, training, and continuing education to compile a safe and proper session for you.
How long is each Session?
All Sessions run 50 minutes in length to allow the instructor sufficient time to clean the space, perform safety checks on the equipment, and prepare for the next session.
How often should I do Pilates and when should I expect to see results?
Because Pilates is a low-impact method of exercise, it is safe to perform daily. Some report immediate results such as postural awareness, a sense of deep relaxation, and a burst of new-found energy. Those who practice Pilates regularly boast a stronger core, muscle definition and strength, flexibility, and reduced (or eliminated) pain.
Individual results will vary and it is important to set realistic expectations. Some factors can slow down or speed up results such as: effort and concentration during your Pilates session, proper diet and nutrition, sufficient sleep, as well as habits and lifestyle. In other words, what you do before and after your Pilates session are just as crucial (if not more so!) to your success.
Joseph Pilates suggests, "If you will faithfully perform your exercises regularly only four times a week for just three months, you will find your body development approaching the ideal, accompanied by renewed mental vigor and spiritual enhancement. Remember, too, that Rome was not built in a day, and that Patience and Persistence are vital qualities in the ultimate successful accomplishment of any worthwhile endeavor."
